The Art of Wheat Weaving

Sunday October 5th, 8:30 to noon

Descriptio

Learn basic skills in the ancient art of weaving wheat straw.  This traditional craft has been practiced all over the world since the beginnings of agriculture, with designs ranging from the most simple to incredibly elaborate patterns.  We will teach you a simple harvest favor from the British Isles, and give you a short history of the craft and its position in the daily life of the average Elizabethan peasant.  You will take home your own creation, and receive follow-up materials and a resource list.  All materials supplied.

Instructors

Cora Hendershot, Master Weaver, has been involved in wheat weaving for 24 years. She studied under Morgyn Owens-Celli, who is now the Curator of the American Museum of Straw Art.  Cora had a gallery Show in Eugene, Oregon in 1994, received a Best New Booth Award from the Colorado Renaissance Fair for 1998. Since 1992, she taught weaving to school children with California renaissance fairs, adult classes in both Portland, OR and Los Angeles, and classroom workshops for 6th, 7th, 8th grades in Pittsburg, CA and Santa Rosa, CA.

Martin Bowers, Journeyman Weaver for 8 years, assistant.
